The Firestars have planted themselves firmly in the frame for a hat-trick of Gilley’s Shield triumphs with two convincing wins during the opening day of the 2019 National Women’s Championship.
After a 6-0 triumph over the ACT Diamonds, NSW backed up for a thumping 15-1 win over the Victoria Titans, Travelodge Aussie Spirit star Stacey Porter again amongst the runs.
She crossed home-plate four times while Taylah Tsitsikronis got on the board three times, Stacey McManus and Michelle Cox scored two runs each with Emma Iuliano, Shannon Keevers and Montana Kearnes getting a single run on the board.
Rachel Lack recorded her run in fine style, belting a home run to centre-left field during the top of the 2nd inning.
The Titans struggled at bat against NSW pitcher Kaia Parnaby who only allowed the single run and two hits from her three innings.
Victorian pitcher Brittany Kennett took the fight to the Firestars with three strike-outs against her name, however, the batting prowess of NSW was enough to seal a comfortable win for the blues.
The Queensland Heat took on the SA Starz for their first match of the 2019 Gilley’s Shield and proved just as tough as expected.
Some impressive work in the field proved the difference as the Heat’s pitchers only recorded one strikeout on their way to 8-1 win. Chelsea Forkin producing some magic in centre field with a diving catch off Georgia Hood’s bat.
Erin Thras chalked up two runs for Queensland, including a homer over centre-field, as Tayla Welch also brought up a homerun to centre. Tamieka Whitefield, Jessica Torpey, Jade Wall, Carmelle Sorensen and Georgia Blair put runs on the board.
Jordan Lambert was the sole run-scorer for the Starz with pitcher Miho Kurita dismissing four Queenslanders with strike-outs.
The hometown WA Flames are currently on diamond for their first game against the ACT Diamonds.
