World Championship Game Eight: Australia 1, Chinese Taipei 0.
Justine Smethurst came within one out of pitching a no-hitter as the Aussie Spirit scored another narrow victory in the Softball World Championship in Canada.
The 1-0 victory over Chinese Taipei was the second consecutive game with the same scoreline, after the identical result against Italy the previous day.
Again, it was a solo home run by Stacey Porter that made all the difference. Porter’s blast on a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the first inning was the first of seven hits for the Spirit.
Porter and Brenda De Blaes each had two hits, with Janice Blackman, Taylah Tsitsikronis and Clare Warwick each getting one.
The lone run was all that was needed thanks to a stellar performance by Smethurst, who looked set for a no-hitter until a two-out single in the seventh inning by Pei-Chun Lin.
The only other blemish on Smethurst’s outing was a second-inning walk, also to Lin, in a complete-game performance that featured seven strikeouts.
The Spirit’s final game of the tournament will be against Brazil or Puerto Rico on Monday morning AEST.
