Aussie Steelers depart for Challenge Cup

The Aussie Steelers depart for New Zealand today for the TAB Challenge Cup at AWF Sports Stadium in Albany from 8-12 February.

The tournament features six of the top 12 men’s teams in the world, including New Zealand (ranked 1), Japan (2), Argentina (3), Australia (5), Czech Republic (8) and Samoa (12).

The Challenge Cup will be played as a double round robin, followed by finals for the top three teams. The top team at the end of the round robin will automatically proceed to the grand final, with a playoff between 2nd and 3rd to determine the other grand finalist. During the round robin, five points are awarded for a win, two points for a loss in a tie-breaker and one point for a loss by two runs or less.

As an event officially sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation, ranking points will be awarded to each team based on final placings.

The Aussie Steelers team for the tournament was finalised recently, with a new-look team providing an opportunity for a number of players: http://www.softball.org.au/new-look-steelers-are-up-for-the-challenge/
