It’s BIG… Pacific School Games held at Adelaide Shores

The Pacific School Games long awaited return was conducted in November throughout the beautiful city of Adelaide. Softball was one of 9 sports represented, with teams converging from across the country. The Pacific School Games is one of the biggest sporting events in the Southern hemisphere attracting more than 15,000 people to the city.

4000 Students from 12 different countries aged between 10-19 years of age came to together to compete. There were over 1000 volunteers who gladly donated their time to ensure that the student athletes in the School Sport pathway had a chance to compete and make new friends at the games.

The games, which are the School Sport flagship event, were also a chance for students to get some education on local South Australian culture and landmarks. The Multi-cultural environment saw different nationality mixing with tours of the Adelaide zoo and other sites.

Softball was heavily participated with games being run in the new facility and South Australian softball headquarters in Adelaide Shores.

The games were conducted in the true spirit of softball with amazing displays of sportsmanship. Teams were often observed cheering for their opponent if they had a great hit or made a terrific play. Regardless of the score line teams were enthusiastic, spirited and encouraging to each other.

No gesture embodied the spirit of the games more than that of Softball South Australia’s donation of equipment to the Indian based teams who had to use tired old equipment or borrow it just to compete. In a collaboration with Diamond Sports and Softball Australia, 15 gloves and 15 pairs of batting gloves were donated to help the Indian team. On top of that Monica Perry, Maddie Cameron and Lana Kaesler from the SA Starz put on a clinic and shared a few tips with some of the India Boys. Monica was busy teaching the pitchers the ‘rise ball’, while Maddie and Lana were focusing on batting technique in an effort to give the players some expert tips to take back home and pass on.

Congratulations to all the participants and teams for putting on a terrific display of softball. There were many champions named at the conclusion of the week, but the ultimate prize was seeing so many smiling faces as students competed in this fantastic game of ours. No doubt they will look back on the many moments created at the tournament as highlights throughout their careers.
