Travelodge Aussie Spirit squad member Gabbie Plain has been named to the list of 25 candidates for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, her second appearance in the list of 25 candidates in her Collegiate career with the Washington Huskies.
The accolade comes following Plain’s squadmates completing their final camp in Australia before they depart for Japan to continue preparations for a fifth Olympic appearance.
Preparations for the Travelodge Aussie Spirit have been disrupted with a Covid outbreak in Queensland forcing a last-minute venue switch for the final Australian camp from Brisbane to Sydney, to ensure players nationwide could attend.
To both the players and coaching staffs credit, the group remain focused on being as best prepared as possible for what will be a very unique Olympic campaign.
Plain continues to star against elite level competition in the Pac-12 NCAA conference and is the nation’s leader in wins and strikeouts, and has a 0.93 ERA through 29 appearances. Her 23-0 record is not only the longest undefeated start in Washington history, but makes her the only pitcher in the nation with at least 20 wins and no losses.
Plain has recorded 13 double-digit strikeout games this year and has eight shutouts, including a perfect game in the very first game of the 2021 season.
She, along with Stacey Porter and Kaia Parnaby will continue to ply their trade in the NCAA tournament and Japan Professional League respectively, before meeting up with the entire Travelodge Aussie Spirit squad in Japan for one final camp ahead of the Olympics.
The watch list for the Collegiate Player of the Year award will be narrowed to ten players on May 5. The three finalists will be announced on May 19, with the winner of the award announced at the Women’s College World Series.
