U18 Women’s Development Camp and Test Series Delivers Valuable Learning Experience
Building on the continued strengthening of pathway opportunities for U18 women’s athletes, the recent national camp and Test Series provided an important environment for development, exposure and international competition preparation.
Head Coach Leigh Godfrey emphasised the importance of the program as the beginning of a longer journey for the athletes involved.
“It’s an exciting time for the U18 women’s program. This marks the beginning of a four-year journey, and the success of the program will rely not only on this group of athletes but also on those who join and contribute along the way.
Our focus is on building an environment where players can develop, compete, and enjoy the process. The commitment and growth of these athletes over the next four years will be key to the program’s success.
The staff and I are really looking forward to getting started and working together to build a fun, hardworking, and successful program.”
The program, structured across multiple days of training, recovery, team meetings, performance testing and competition, was designed to replicate high-performance demands while also supporting athlete education and long-term development outcomes.
U18 Women’s National Squad Camp
The camp commenced and saw the whole squad come together with. Athletes completed structured hitting blocks, baserunning development, defensive positional breakdowns and team play sessions, ensuring a balanced approach between technical refinement and tactical understanding.
The U18 Women’s National Squad Camp brought the full Australian squad together in Redlands, providing a focused high‑performance environment ahead of the competition block. Under Head Coach Leigh Godfrey, athletes refined their technical skills, strengthened their tactical understanding, and built team cohesion while managing training loads to remain fresh for the U23 Women’s National Championship that followed. Opening activities including physical testing, movement assessments, batting evaluations and positional skill sessions.
Athletes selected in U23 state teams transitioned directly into the Championship, gaining valuable experience against senior domestic sides, the U18 New Zealand team, and the Australian Development Team. Those not selected continued their progression within the U18 Development Team, receiving extended coaching and additional competition opportunities. The camp successfully ensured that every athlete remained engaged in the national pathway and prepared for future international representation.

Across the week, the group was immersed in a demanding schedule that mirrored the expectations of high‑performance softball. Early mornings, structured preparation, tactical meetings, competitive match play and disciplined recovery routines formed the backbone of their experience. The athletes were challenged not only to refine their technical skills, but to adopt the daily habits and professionalism required at the national level.
The competitive environment accelerated learning. Facing strong state teams and the New Zealand squad provided the athletes with meaningful opportunities to apply their training under pressure. These games highlighted the speed, physicality, and decision‑making demands of elite softball, giving players a clear benchmark for where they stand and where they must grow. Throughout the week, the group demonstrated adaptability, resilience and a willingness to compete, qualities that will serve them well as they progress through the pathway.
Equally important was the emphasis on recovery and load management. With multiple games, travel blocks, and training sessions, athletes learned how to manage their bodies across a tournament‑style week. Nutrition, mobility work, hydration, and sleep routines became essential components of their daily rhythm. Skills that are vital for long‑term success in high‑performance environments.
Team meetings and game-planning sessions were integrated throughout the week, reinforcing offensive and defensive strategies. These sessions focused on clarity of roles, communication standards, and situational awareness — key components when transitioning into international competition.
Despite coming from different states and backgrounds, the group built a strong sense of identity. Shared challenges, tight turnarounds, and competitive matchups fostered a collective resilience that grew stronger each day. By the end of the week, the Development Team had formed a connected, cohesive unit with a clearer understanding of what it means to represent Australia.
A key component of the camp was the three-game Test Series against New Zealand, providing valuable trans-Tasman match exposure in a competitive environment.
The series delivered high-quality games across the midweek schedule, with both teams competing strongly. Ultimately, New Zealand secured a 3 - 1 series victory, highlighting the competitiveness of the contest and providing important performance data for athletes and coaching staff alike.
Each game presented different challenges, including tactical adjustments, pitching matchups, and situational pressure moments. The experience reinforced the importance of consistency across innings, composure under pressure, and execution in key moments, all critical growth areas for athletes within the U18 pathway.
The Development Team leaves the camp with sharpened skills, stronger tactical awareness, improved professionalism, and a deeper appreciation for the standards of international softball. Most importantly, they depart as a more confident and connected group, one that has taken a significant step forward in their journey through the national pathway.
Learning and Development Outcomes
Beyond the results, the camp delivered several key development outcomes:
- Physical Readiness: The demands of multiple training sessions and international games highlighted the importance of strength, conditioning, and recovery management.
- Game Understanding: Team meetings and playbook sessions strengthened tactical awareness and communication.
- Performance Standards: Athletes experienced expectations aligned with national representation, including preparation routines, professionalism, and accountability.
- Exposure to International Style: Competing against New Zealand provided insight into different pitching strategies, defensive structures, and in-game adjustments.
The balance between training, recovery, competition and education ensured athletes were challenged while also supported throughout the week.
Strengthening the U18 Pathway
This camp and Test Series further demonstrated the commitment to providing meaningful development opportunities for U18 women’s athletes. Experiences such as these bridge the gap between domestic performance and international readiness, creating clearer progression pathways for emerging talent.
The exposure to structured high-performance environments, combined with competitive international games, ensures athletes continue building the technical, tactical, physical and psychological foundations required for future national representation.
