U15 Women’s World Cup Qualifier Camp Showcases Australia’s Emerging Talent

Published Wed 20 May 2026

Softball Australia recently hosted the U15 Women’s World Cup Qualifier Selection Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, bringing together some of the nation’s most promising young athletes as part of the ongoing national pathway program.

Held from 15 - 19 April, the camp featured athletes from both the Australian U14 Women’s Squad and Australian U16 Women’s Squad, all vying for selection in the upcoming U15 Women’s World Cup Qualifier Team.

This camp represented an important milestone for the U14 Australian Women’s Squad and U16 Australian Women’s Squad, providing the first opportunity in the new season for both squads to come together, train in a high-performance environment and establish the foundations of their respective pathways for the year ahead. The combined environment allowed athletes to be challenged, observe and supported within a unified program structure, setting clear expectations moving forward.

The five-day program was designed to challenge and assess athletes across all aspects of high-performance softball, both on and off the diamond. Athletes undertook a comprehensive schedule that included fitness testing aligned to Softball Australia’s Athlete Development Framework, technical and tactical softball sessions, classroom education, recovery protocols and competitive scratch matches.

Throughout the camp, athletes participated in Athlete Development Framework (ADF) testing delivered in partnership with AIS staff, including:

• Sprint testing
• Countermovement jump assessment
• Grip strength testing
• YoYo fitness testing
• 5-10-5
• Throwing Speed
• Pitching biomec analysis
• Rapsodo analysis (Pitching & Batting)
• Blast Hitting Analysis

On-diamond sessions focused on key areas of development including hitting and baserunning testing, positional defence, throwing progression, situational defence and offence and battery-specific analysis sessions. Pitchers also completed Rapsodo capture sessions, allowing coaches and support staff to gather valuable performance data.

The camp concluded with a series of competitive match play opportunities across multiple split-squad games, providing selectors with the opportunity to assess athletes in game environments and under pressure.

In addition to softball performance, athletes were exposed to a number of high-performance education opportunities including safeguarding and wellbeing sessions, recovery education with physiotherapists, culture building activities, and an Aussie Spirit athlete Q&A.

This camp represented an important step forward for the U15 Women’s pathway program. Historically, teams within this age group have largely been selected from performances at National Championships; however, this environment provided selectors with an additional opportunity to assess athletes within a high-performance setting alongside other emerging athletes from across the country. The camp allowed selectors to observe how athletes adapted to increased standards, responded under pressure, and performed within a more competitive and nationally aligned program. Importantly, it also enabled consideration of off-field performance measures, including fitness testing outcomes, professionalism, coachability, and the ability to meet high performance standards and expectations, providing a more holistic view of each athlete’s development and potential.

The camp forms part of Softball Australia’s ongoing commitment to identifying and developing future Aussie Spirit athletes through nationally aligned pathway opportunities and represents another important step in building the future of the women’s program.

Leigh Martyn U14 Australian Women's Head Coach "The AIS camp was an amazing experience for everyone involved in our new program and a really important step forward for our U14 pathway. The athletes and officials really relished the opportunity.
Yes, it was an important part of the selection process for the U15 World Cup Qualifier, but just as importantly it was the first time we’ve brought this Under 14 group together. This stage of the pathway is critical to getting things right early, so athletes can move seamlessly through the pathway programs and ultimately towards the Aussie Spirit. We really liked what we saw, and there are exciting times ahead for Softball Australia."

Amanda 'Reggie' Fairley U16 Australian Women's Head Coach " This camp did nothing but excite our coaching staff for the future of Australian softball. Across the five days, athletes showed outstanding potential while fully investing in the process and expectations of a national junior squad environment, resulting in significant growth both on and off the field in a short period of time."

Athletes will now enter a 10-week training block within their home states, focusing on the individual feedback and development areas identified throughout the camp. This period will provide athletes with the opportunity to continue refining their skills and preparing for upcoming pathway opportunities and future national team activities.
