Strengthening Pathway Opportunities for U16 Women’s Athletes
Softball Australia is proud to continue strengthening the national high-performance pathway through expanded development opportunities designed to support growth, readiness, and long-term success for young female athletes. These initiatives ensure emerging players have access to structured environments where they can develop their skills, gain meaningful competitive experience, and prepare for advancement to higher levels of domestic and international representation.
The U16 Women’s National Development Team Camp represents a key stage within this pathway, offering selected athletes an invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in a high-performance setting that focuses on technical development, tactical understanding, and competitive readiness.
U16 Women’s National Development Team Camp Announced for January 2026
Softball Australia is pleased to confirm that the U16 Women’s National Development Team Camp will take place at Blacktown International Sportspark, NSW, from 19–26 January 2026. This camp is an integral part of the national pathway, providing targeted support for athletes who continue to progress through the system and strive toward future national representation.
In line with Softball Australia’s commitment to meaningful athlete development, the 2026 camp will be heavily competition-based, giving athletes the opportunity to apply their training in challenging, game-like environments.
A key component of the camp will see selected U16 athletes compete within the U18 Women’s National Championship, providing exposure to a higher level of competition and the opportunity to test their skills against older and more experienced opposition. This aligns with the broader pathway approach seen in older age groups, where athletes experience elevated, high-pressure environments to accelerate their growth.
The U16 Development Team will also participate in a competition series against the U17 Women’s New Zealand Team, adding an international element to the camp. This series will offer valuable cross-country experience, building confidence, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of international styles of play—an important milestone for athletes aspiring to future Australian representation.
Pathway Alignment and Ongoing Development
The U16 Development Camp mirrors the structure and intent of higher age-group camps such as the U18 Women’s National Squad Camp, ensuring consistency and continuity throughout the national pathway. While the U18 camp focuses on technical refinement, tactical preparation, and readiness for international competition, the U16 camp serves as the foundation for these next steps—introducing athletes to high-performance expectations while allowing them to develop core skills in an age-appropriate environment.
The camp is specifically designed for athletes who have not been selected for their state U18 teams. Softball Australia emphasises that state representation at the U18 Women’s National Championship remains the priority for all eligible athletes.
This approach ensures fairness across the pathway and supports the integrity of state programs while still providing meaningful national opportunities for athletes who require further development before progressing to higher levels.
Supporting the Future of Women’s Softball
Softball Australia remains committed to providing clear, structured, and inclusive development opportunities for athletes at every stage of the pathway. The U16 Women’s National Development Team Camp represents an important step in preparing the next generation of talent, ensuring they are supported, challenged, and equipped with the skills required for future success. Through high-quality coaching, targeted feedback, competitive opportunities, and exposure to international play, the camp reinforces Softball Australia’s ongoing dedication to nurturing athletes and building a strong future for women’s softball in Australia.
