Pathway Opportunities Strengthen for U18 Women’s Athletes

Softball Australia is proud to announce significant enhancements to the national development pathway for athletes, with a strong focus on supporting growth, readiness, and performance across all levels of the game. These initiatives are designed to provide young athletes with meaningful opportunities to develop their skills, gain competitive experience, and prepare for higher levels of national and international competition.

The upcoming U18 Women’s program represents a key milestone in the pathway, offering athletes an invaluable chance to continue their development and compete in both domestic and international settings. By providing structured, high-performance environments, Softball Australia is ensuring that emerging talent is nurtured, challenged, and supported to reach their full potential.

U18 Women’s National Squad Camp

The 2025 U18 Women’s National Squad Camp will bring together the full U18 Women’s Australian Squad in Redlands, Queensland, from 12–15 December 2025. This camp represents a cornerstone of Softball Australia’s high-performance pathway, allowing athletes to immerse themselves in a structured, elite-level training environment.

Led by U18 Women’s Head Coach Leigh Godfrey, alongside her soon-to-be-appointed support staff and Softball Australia’s High-Performance team, the camp will focus on technical refinement, tactical awareness, and preparation for competition at the highest levels. Coaches will provide individualised feedback to ensure that each athlete’s development goals are supported, while also fostering team cohesion and understanding of advanced game strategies.

The camp’s primary emphasis is on athlete development and readiness rather than heavy physical load. With the U23 Women’s National Championship scheduled immediately afterward, training sessions will be carefully planned to maintain freshness, reduce injury risk, and ensure athletes are fully prepared to perform when it matters most.

Athletes will arrive in Brisbane on Friday, 12 December, with logistics coordinated to ensure a smooth transition into the next phase of their week. Softball Australia congratulates all U18 Women’s Australian Squad members who have been selected in their respective U23 state teams, recognising the Championship as an important step within the women’s high-performance pathway and a key opportunity to gain exposure to high-level competition.

During the Championship, selected athletes will compete against the U18 Women’s New Zealand Team and the U18 Women’s Australian Development Team, gaining invaluable international experience and testing their skills against both domestic and international opponents. These experiences are crucial for building confidence, resilience, and competitive acumen in preparation for future national representation.

The remaining athletes from the U18 Women’s Australian Squad will form the U18 Women’s Australian Development Team, continuing their growth through an extended camp and additional competition opportunities. This ensures that all athletes within the squad remain actively engaged in the pathway and are provided with meaningful opportunities to develop their skills and game understanding.

U18 Women’s National Development Team

Athletes not selected for their U23 state teams will form the U18 Women’s Australian Development Team. This team provides an important platform for continued involvement in the national pathway through the U18 Women’s National Development Team Camp, running 15–22 December 2025 at Redlands/Downey Park, Queensland.

The extended camp offers players ongoing access to national coaching staff, detailed performance feedback, and exposure to both domestic and international gameplay. Through structured training sessions, match simulations, and competitive opportunities, athletes will strengthen their technical, tactical, and mental skills.

The Development Team will compete in the first round of the U23 Women’s National Championship, as well as in a series against the U18 Women’s New Zealand Team. These experiences will not only enhance players’ competitive readiness but also allow them to benchmark their progress against peers and international opposition, providing critical insights for future growth.

The program is designed to ensure that every athlete within the national system remains actively engaged in their development, maintaining continuity and momentum in their high-performance journey. Softball Australia is committed to offering every player within the pathway meaningful opportunities to progress, regardless of current team selection.

Collaboration with State Programs

Softball Australia recognises the vital role state programs play in developing and supporting athletes within the national pathway. Collaboration and open communication between Softball Australia, state administrators, and coaching staff ensure that athletes’ training loads, travel commitments, and competition schedules are effectively balanced.

State Head Coaches have been actively engaged to coordinate athlete availability, arrival times, and training commitments ahead of the U23 National Championship. This collaborative approach ensures a unified, athlete-centred strategy for preparation, supporting both performance outcomes and player wellbeing. By fostering strong links between national and state programs, Softball Australia aims to create a seamless development pathway that maximises opportunities for young athletes to succeed.

Supporting the Future of Women’s Softball

Through initiatives such as the U18 Women’s National Squad Camp and the National Development Team, Softball Australia continues to strengthen the female high-performance pathway and nurture the next generation of national representatives. By providing structured development opportunities, high-quality coaching, and exposure to elite-level competition, the pathway ensures that aspiring athletes are well-equipped to reach their full potential.

Softball Australia remains committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and challenging environment that empowers athletes to grow both on and off the field. These initiatives reflect the organisation’s ongoing dedication to fostering excellence in women’s softball, ensuring that Australia’s athletes remain competitive on the world stage.
