G’day LA! Softball Australia celebrates inclusion in 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games

Published Mon 16 Oct 2023

In tonight's vote at the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai, the IOC announced that Baseball/Softball will be on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games program.

“This is fantastic news for our softball community,” said Softball Australia Chief Executive Officer Sarah Loh, “Being included in the Olympic Games program will provide an immeasurable boost to grassroots participation and the ongoing sustainability of our sport in Australia.  This announcement will inspire a new generation of kids to pick up a bat, ball and glove and ignite their own Olympic dream.”

On behalf of the Softball Australia Board and the Australian softball community, we thank the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the LA28 organising committee for including softball on the program. We’d also like to acknowledge the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for advocating for the inclusion of softball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and thank the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport for their ongoing support of our sport.

Australia has a long and proud history of winning medals in Olympic softball. For our athletes and high-performance teams, the hard work starts now to embrace this opportunity and ensure Australia’s qualification and peak performance at the Games.”

Chair of Softball Australia Richard Lindell added “It has taken a lot of hard work across the board to ensure Softball’s return to the Olympic program. Let’s go for gold in Los Angeles and work together to see Softball continue on the Olympic program for Brisbane 2032 and beyond, a move which will unite all of Australia behind our wonderful sport.”
