Futures Women Program Wraps Up a Successful Year of Development & International Experience
Published Fri 16 Oct 2026
The Australian Futures Women’s Program has concluded another successful year, providing athletes with valuable opportunities to develop, compete and gain international experience as part of Softball Australia's National Talent Pathway.
Throughout 2026, athletes participated in a range of high-performance environments designed to prepare them for future opportunities within the Aussie Spirit program and beyond. The program culminated with an international tour to Japan, where selected athletes represented Australia against quality opposition while gaining exposure to different styles of softball, training methods and international competition.
From Competition to Development
The journey began at the Redlands Shootout, followed by a Futures Camp held at Redlands Softball Association. The combination of the Shootout and camp combined competition, skill development, testing, education and recovery sessions, allowing athletes to continue building on their performances while working within a national program environment. The environment challenged athletes to take learnings from competition and apply them immediately, while continuing to respond to coaching and demonstrate their ability to adapt. Having Kerrie Porter (HC Aussie Spirit as part of the staff at the camp, provided an opportunity for athletes to work within a national program environment and gain further insight into the standards and expectations associated with the Australian pathway. The conclusion of the camp each athlete worked with the staff to prepare their Individual athletes development plans (IAPD) which formed the base of their training plans for the next 6 months.
The camp also formed one part of the selection process for the Futures Women's Japan Tour, with athletes challenged to demonstrate consistency, adaptability, and a commitment to their continued development both on and off the field.
Valuable International Experience in Japan
Following selection, the Futures Women travelled to Japan from 29 June to 12 July, where they trained and competed against some of the country's leading teams, including Ogaki Minamo & Toyota Industries Corporation.
A highlight of the tour was the opportunity to train with Ogaki Minamo, providing athletes and staff with first-hand insight into the technical standards, preparation methods and training culture that have helped Japan become one of the world's leading softball nations.
Beyond the diamond, athletes experienced Japanese culture through visits to Gifu Castle, the Mt. Kinkazan Ropeway and sightseeing opportunities in Osaka, further broadening their understanding of international sport and the global softball community.
The tour represented an important step in preparing athletes for future international opportunities, while reinforcing the standards and expectations required to progress through Australia's high-performance pathway.
Supporting Ongoing Development Through Hub Training
A key feature of the 2026 Futures Women’s Program was the weekly Hub Training sessions delivered across Australia, providing athletes with consistent year-round development opportunities outside of camps and competition. These sessions enabled athletes to focus on the individual priorities identified within their Individual Athlete Performance and Development Plans (IAPDs), while benefiting from regular access to Futures and Aussie Spirit coaches. College-based athletes rejoined the program during June and July, bringing the full squad together ahead of the Japan Tour. The Hub Training model has been instrumental in accelerating the athletes technical, tactical and personal development.
Building the Future of Australian Softball
The Futures Women's Program continues to play a critical role in preparing athletes for the next stage of their development, bridging the gap between domestic competition and senior international representation.
The 2026 program successfully brought together athletes based in Australia and those competing within the US college system, creating a connected pathway that supports athlete development regardless of location.
As Australian softball looks ahead to the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Finals in Brisbane in 2027 and the LA28 Olympic Games, the Futures Program remains a key component in developing the next generation of Aussie Spirit athletes.
A New Chapter for Neridah Wearne
Softball Australia would also like to acknowledge and thank Neridah Wearne for her outstanding contribution as Head Coach of the Australian Futures Women's Team.
Over the past year, Wearne has played a significant role in shaping the program, helping establish clear connections between the Futures and Aussie Spirit environments while supporting athletes as they navigate the next stages of their development.
As a current member of the Aussie Spirit Coaching Pool, Wearne is already contributing to the development of the national battery athletes while further enhancing her own coaching expertise within the high-performance environment. Her progression highlights the National Talent Pathway in action, creating opportunities for coaches to gain experience, broaden their capabilities and advance through the Australian softball system.
Reflecting on her time leading the Futures Women's Program, Wearne said:
"The focus this year was on creating a program that genuinely prepares athletes for the next step and provides a clear pathway towards the Aussie Spirit. Bringing together both Australian-based athletes and those competing in the US college system was an important part of that vision, ensuring all athletes had access to meaningful development opportunities.
Through the hub training program, individual athlete development planning and the Japan Tour, athletes were able to experience many of the expectations and standards associated with the Aussie Spirit environment. Hopefully, that's helped make the transition to senior international softball a more seamless one as they continue their journey.
I've thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Futures program. Working with athletes as they experience their first exposure to higher-level international softball and helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed at that level has been incredibly rewarding”
Looking Ahead
While the 2026 program has come to a close, the journey continues for the Futures Women's athletes as they return to their home environments and continue working towards future national team opportunities.
With the Women's Softball World Cup Finals coming to Brisbane in 2027 and LA28 on the horizon, there has never been a more exciting time to be part of the Australian women's softball pathway.
The experiences gained throughout the Futures Program, from domestic competition and development camps through to international touring, provide an important foundation for the next generation of athletes as they continue their pursuit of senior Australian representation.
