Australia U23 Men’s Softball Team Secures Silver at WBSC World Cup 2026

Published Fri 08 May 2026

Australia’s Under 23 Men’s Softball Team has delivered an outstanding campaign at the WBSC U23 Men’s Softball World Cup 2026, finishing as silver medallists after a high-quality tournament that showcased both depth and resilience.

The gold medal game saw Japan defeat Australia 4-2, with Japan capitalising on key opportunities to secure the world title. Congratulations to Japan on a deserving championship performance to claim the World Championship.

Australia entered the event as defending champions and quickly established momentum through the Opening Round. Strong wins over Singapore and Denmark, along with important victories against Mexico and Venezuela, positioned Australia strongly heading into the Super Round. A standout result was the 5-0 win over Canada, underpinned by dominant pitching and disciplined offence.

Australia’s Super Round began with a defining clash against eventual champions Japan. In a high-quality contest, Australia produced one of its best performances of the tournament to defeat Japan 6-5, with Jack Besgrove earning the win in a composed outing on the mound. This victory not only demonstrated Australia’s ability to match the world’s best but also played a crucial role in securing a place in the gold medal game.

The Australians followed this with a critical Trans-Tasman clash against New Zealand Junior Black Sox, where they recorded a 3-2 win in another tightly contested match. Besgrove again led from the mound, delivering under pressure to secure the result and confirm Australia’s progression to the final.

Individually, the tournament highlighted the quality of Australia’s emerging talent. Besgrove was outstanding throughout, delivering multiple high-strikeout performances and consistently leading Australia in key moments. His influence across both the Super Round and earlier matches cemented his status as one of the tournament’s elite players.

Offensively, Boston Lowe was a standout contributor, combining consistency at the plate with the ability to deliver in critical situations. Support across the roster was strong, with Joel Byrne and Brian Kirkup providing valuable pitching depth, while Kayne Richmann contributed key offensive moments.

Capping off the campaign, both Besgrove and Lowe were named in the All-World Team, recognising their outstanding performances and placing them among the best players at the tournament.

While Australia ultimately fell short of defending its title, the campaign reinforces the strength of the national pathway and the team’s ability to consistently compete with the world’s best. With a silver medal finish, Australia leaves the tournament with pride in its performance and strong confidence in the future of the program.

Several of the players who represented Australia this week were among the standout performers at the Laing Harrow Shield earlier this year, a reminder of the role the Under 23 Men's National Championship plays in preparing athletes for international competition. The shield has carried Laing Harrow's name since 2003. That connection between the national championship and the world stage is exactly what a healthy pathway looks like, and this year's silver medal is the result.

In the meantime, Australia's U18 Men's were competing in the Oceania U18 Men's Qualification event, which saw New Zealand, Australia and American Samoa, with the top two teams cementing a spot in the upcoming U18 Men's Softball World Cup to be held next year.

In the final game of the tournament, Australia faced the unbeaten New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman clash. The Kiwis proved their strength on the mound, scoring 7 runs to Australia's 2 to take out the tournament.

On top of Australia qualifying for the U18 Men's World Cup, there were plenty of positives Australia took out of the tournament. Australia led all teams in runs (45), hits (56), stolen bases (10), and fielding percentage (0.976) from their 6 games.
