All Eyes on Prague: What You Need to Know Ahead of the Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage
Published Mon 15 Jun 2026
The road to World Cup glory, and the LA28 Olympic Games, begins in Prague, with everything on the line from the very first pitch. Here’s a quick guide to what matters most.
What is happening in 2026?
The WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup kicks off with the Group Stage, played across three locations: Prague, Lima and Oklahoma City.
Each group features six teams, with the top two advancing directly to the Finals in 2027 in Queensland, and keeping their Olympic dreams alive.
How does the format work?
Each team plays a single round-robin (one game against every opponent).
From there:
-
Top 4 teams advance to the Play-offs
-
Top 2 teams play each other for a ticket to the Group Stage Finals
-
3rd vs 4th play off in an elimination game
-
The winner gets one more chance against the loser of 1st vs 2nd
-
Winner advances to the Group Stage Final and secures the second qualifying spot.
With only two teams per group qualifier progressing automatically to the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Finals, every match is critical.
Why is this World Cup so important?
This isn’t just about winning a World Cup:
-
One direct qualification spot for LA28 is on offer to the winner of the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup Finals 2027
-
Teams are also battling for world ranking points
-
It’s one of the biggest milestones on the Olympic pathway
Where is the Prague Group being played?
Games will be held at Svoboda Park in Prague, one of Europe’s top softball venues, hosted by leading club Joudrs Prague.
The Czech capital sets the stage for the tournament’s opening group from 17–120 June 2026, with playoffs and finals on the 21st (AEST)
Where Do the Aussies Stand?
Australia heads into the Prague Group ranked No. 11 in the world, facing a strong field:
-
Canada (No. 4) – highest-ranked team in the group
-
Chinese Taipei (No. 5)
-
Italy (No. 9)
-
Czechia (No. 10) – home advantage
-
Cuba (No. 14)
What’s the challenge?
The Aussie Spirit will be required to land in the top two and survive the playoff pathway to secure a place in the Finals.
Why history is on Australia’s side:
-
Australia is one of only three nations to compete in every Women’s Softball World Cup
-
One of just four countries to ever win the world title
What to watch:
Australia opens its campaign against host nation Czechia, setting the tone for a tough group where every result counts.
With a Finals spot, Olympic qualification, and national pride at stake, Prague is just the beginning, but it could define the journey ahead for the Aussie Spirit.
