A fighting spirit will be the key to Aussie success in Ireland

Published Mon 10 Jul 2023

The Aussie Spirit will start their World Cup campaign on Tuesday in Dublin, Ireland. The never give up attitude that makes the Aussies one of the most respected programs in world softball will need to be in full force as the team aim to qualify for the final eight of the World Cup.

The scenario is simple: the Spirit must finish in the top two to progress. They will face World No. 1, USA, World No. 3, Chinese Taipei, Great Britain, Ireland and Botswana. The opportunity is there, but it will be important that they stay on top of their game from the first pitch.

One thing is for sure, they are not fazed by world rankings. The Aussie Spirit have brought their ‘A’ game to Ireland to prove that they are worthy of a higher ranking than ninth.

USA are anticipated to be there in the final on the last day, but their new look line up - particularly in the pitching roster - opens the door for the Aussies to take it to the Americans.

A highly anticipated key matchup of this week will be against Chinese Taipei. In their last meetings at the 2022 World Games, Chinese Taipei put up two wins over the Spirit, and it is likely the Aussie Spirit will have to beat Chinese Taipei twice this week to progress.

Great Britain is an unknown for the Aussies, with a new coach and a lot of American-based players to their roster. How the Aussie Spirit handle their pitching ace, Georgia Corrick will be the key for a first-up win.

Led by Captain Clare Warwick, the Spirit have found the right balance of youth and experience for the World Cup Group Stage. Kaia Parnaby comes back into the side after missing the 2022 World Games and will add considerable strength to the pitching line up. Regarded as one of the world’s best pitchers, Parnaby will spearhead the pitching, complimented by Ellen Roberts, Kandra Lamb and Georgia Hood.

The Spirit have seven Olympians on their roster, led by Warwick, Parnaby and Roberts. Stacey McManus, Taylah Tsitsikronis, Belinda White and Jade Wall join them, providing a formidable core for the opposition to face. The seven veterans bring over 1000 international games between them and every bit of that experience will be important if the Aussies are to progress.

Kandra Lamb and Georgia Hood have both come off great collegiate seasons in the USA and will look to contribute to the Spirit line-up, while Tamieka Whitefield and Olivia Kuzminski have been gaining attention for their undeniable talents.

The Aussies will undoubtedly bring an outstanding brand of softball to Dublin this week and will be supported by a strong Australian contingent in the crowd.
