The combination of a brutal schedule and a brilliant pitching performance handed the Aussie Spirit their first loss of the World Cup in Oklahoma City.
After beating New Zealand earlier in the day, the Australians had to endure a 10-hour wait before the first pitch of the night game against USA.
And with USA starting pitcher Jessica Moore dominating, the Spirit could not get their bats going, losing 7-0 for their first defeat of the tournament after three successive wins.
Moore and relief pitcher Ally Carda combined to throw a no-hitter for the USA in a game that ended after six innings on the seven-run rule.
Only two Spirit players — Chelsea Forkin and Carmelle Sorensen — reached base, both on walks.
Australia’s pitching duties were shared by Justine Smethurst, Kaia Parnaby and Jocelyn Jeloudev, who combined for seven strikeouts.
At least tomorrow’s schedule is a bit less arduous for the Spirit. They have the morning and early afternoon to recover before playing Puerto Rico and China in an evening double-header.
