West Australia still has a horse in the Gilley’s Shield race after the WA Flames came out victorious in a tight contest over the Victoria Titans.
It was a crucial game for both sides who sat at six points on the tournament ladder with the winner guaranteed to play in tomorrow’s finals at Mirrabooka International Softball Stadium.
The opening two innings hinted at this match being a tight one with neither able to put runs on the board, WA was the first to break the deadlock when Sara Riou crossed at the top of the 3rd.
Victoria was able to reply at the bottom of the 4th as Sarah Tutchener scored to level the match at 1-1. Leigh Godfrey and Leah Parry raced home at the top of the 6th and Riou added another at the top of the 7th inning.
Amber Johnson closed out the pitching for the Flames and ensured the Titans couldn’t add to their score, WA winners 4-1.
In what could be considered a warm-up game for the upcoming finals, the New South Wales Firestars defeated the South Australia Starz 10-2 in just five innings.
As both teams had already secured a finals berth a number of girls were rested including Stacey Porter and Kaia Parnaby for NSW and Jailyn Ford and Jordan Lambert for the Starz.
Six runs in the first two innings and four in the 4th were enough for the Firestars to secure another win. Shannon Keevers had four while Thali Moore, Taylah Tsitsikronis, Rachel Lack, Stacy McManus, Montana Kearnes and Emma Iuliano all scored.
Amber Hood and Madeline Cameron got on the board for the Starz.
The Titans would have a nervous wait watching New South Wales take on the ACT Diamonds in the final match of the day; a win from the Diamonds would knock them out of a finals race.
The Firestars ended up winning comfortably 9-0 to remain undefeated meaning the Victorians live to fight another day courtesy of runs for and against.
Following the final day of regular fixtures, the ladder is as follows:
- NSW 20
2. SA 14
3. WA 8
4. VIC 6
5. ACT 6
6. QLD 6
