USA too strong for the Travelodge Aussie Spirit at the Japan Cup

It was a beautiful day for softball in Takasaki as the Travelodge Aussie Spirit took the field in game one of the Japan Cup against the number one ranked USA.  Although the score line doesn’t necessarily reflect the closeness of the contest, the Spirit were overpowered by the might of the US bats who homered twice with runners on base, which is where they did most of their damage.

Ellen Roberts was focused and took control in the circle from the very first pitch, throwing four innings and limiting the opposition to only 2 earned runs. Some missed opportunities in the field didn’t assist Roberts or Kaia Parnaby who came in to finish the game, however the US put up 8 hits in total, with the Spirit only able to put 3 on the board against Monica Abbott who threw a complete game shutout.

Highlights for the day were Stacey Porter and Clare Warwick with singles and Tamieka Whitefield with a hard hit double in the left centre alley.

Travelodge Aussie Spirit will look to rebound in tomorrow’s game, taking on Chinese Taipei (3pm AEST) and Japan (8pm AEST).
