The Australian Defence Force Softball selected a male and female team to travel to New Zealand to compete at the 2016 New Zealand Defence Force Services Tournament from 1-4 March 2016.
This year it was a five-team tournament with New Zealand Airforce, New Zealand Army, New Zealand Navy, New Zealand Police and the Australian Defence Force. Games were held at RNZAF Base at Whenuapaui. The preliminary rounds saw the men’s team undefeated and finish on top of the ladder, with the girls losing their first game to a strong New Zealand Army team, but still managed to finish on top of the ladder at the end of the preliminary games.
The men played NZ Police in the semi final, but went down in a close encounter. The women’s team were again defeated by NZ Army.
On day three, were defeated by the New Zealand Army to finish their tournament in 3rd place. This was their best achievement in 15 years. The women fronted New Zealand Airforce and won by the mercy rule and went on to play the New Zealand Army in the grand final. It was a tight game and the Australian Defence Force girls fought hard with some outstanding batting efforts, winning 7-4.
On the final day, the annual Trans-Tasman Test matches were played at Rosedale Park between the Australian Defence Force and the New Zealand Defence Force. The women played first and after a tight game, were victorious 4-1. The men played a solid game but the NZDF were too strong winning 7-3.
