World Championship Game Nine: Puerto Rico 4, Australia 1.

The Aussie Spirit finished their World Championship campaign on a disappointing note with a 4-1 loss to Puerto Rico.

The defeat consigned the Australians to 10th place overall, a long way short of their pre-tournament ambition of claiming a medal.

In their final game of the World Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, the Spirit came up against Puerto Rico, who had beaten Brazil earlier in the day to claim a place in the top 10.

The Australian offence managed only five hits against Puerto Rican pitcher Meghan King, who struck out 11 and walked only one batter.

Taylah Tsitsikronis and Janice Blackman each had two hits, with Chelsea Forkin picking up Australia’s only other hit.

The lone run was scored in the third inning, when Forkin doubled and was driven in by Blackman’s single.

Pitching duties were shared by Kaia Parnaby, who allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks, with four strikeouts, in 4.1 innings of work.

She was relieved by Vanessa Stokes, who did not allow a hit or a walk in 2.2 innings, striking out one.

In the tournament final, the USA beat Japan 7-3 to claim the gold medal.

The win was set up in the first inning when Michelle Moultrie hit a grand slam.
