The excitement level over the Asia Pacific Cup is only just starting to fade — and already the key players are looking ahead to next year.
Some of the teams have indicated they are keen to participate in 2019, with dates locked in for January 31-February 3.
It is hoped that the teams that competed at Blacktown International Sportspark over the past four days will return next year.
Softball Australia CEO Chet Gray said the inaugural tournament was a success on several levels.
“It was everything we could have hoped for as our first major International event since 2005,” Gray said. “We achieved almost everything we set out to achieve.
“It was the first time in Australian softball history that a game was telecast live, through Fox Sports, and also shown throughout Asia.
“We also had radio coverage on Alive 90.5 FM and we had live streaming of several games throughout the tournament. So we exposed softball to a huge audience these past four days.”
Apart from 26 games of softball, there was plenty of stuff going on off the field. There was a pre-tournament mayoral reception, a player autograph session, a base-running competition for young fans, WSBC Hall of Fame inductions … even a competition for the best sign.
Feedback from participants and spectators has been overwhelmingly positive. “Great credit must be given to Softball New South Wales, Blacktown Venue Management, Blacktown City Council and all the volunteers,” Gray said. “They did a fantastic job.”
