Porter’s homer lifts Aussie Spirit over Italy

World Championhip Game Seven: Australia 1, Italy 0

A solo home run by Stacey Porter was enough to give the Aussie Spirit a narrow win over Italy in their World Championship game in Canada.

Having been eliminated from medal contention with a loss to China the previous day, the Australians are playing for places 9-16.

They got back on the winning list against Italy, winning 1-0 thanks to solid pitching and defence, with Porter’s homer the difference between the two teams.

The official tournament website interviewed pitcher Vanessa Stokes before the game and asked about the Spirit’s failure to reach the medal qualifying round.

“It’s so disappointing because everyone worked so hard,” Stokes said.

“We’re a great team and we’ve got experience, we prepared so well . . . and unfortunately for us, we just had a bit of bad luck.

“But that’s sport. Good luck to all the teams in the finals. We’ll be back again in the next couple of years.”
