NSW claims John Reid Shield, NSW Country Gold win U15 Boys’ title

NSW claimed the John Reid Shield for the second time in three years, with a 2-1 victory over ACT at the Open Men’s National Softball Championship.

In front of a vocal crowd at Hawker International Softball Complex in ACT, the NSW team were led by an outstanding pitching performance from Harri Peters, with 13 strikeouts, and a phenomenal diving catch by Callum Beashel in the bottom of the sixth inning, which proved to be a game saver.

NSW showed from early in the game that they were going to be hard to beat, scoring in the top of the second inning with a triple to Liam O’Leary followed by a single to James Brownlow to give them a 1-0 lead.

Hayden Mathews doubled the lead in the top of the fourth inning, with a solo home run to make it a 2-0 ball game.

ACT however were never going to go down without a fight. They staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, Josh McGovern getting on base with a walk before a hit to right field by Josh White was errored, allowing McGovern to score and make it a 2-1 scoreline.

ACT looked likely to add to their score in the bottom of the sixth, with Matt Wickham and Jamie Sheehan on base with one out. A shallow fly to left field made it two out, before Bolton Nussbaum hit a hard line drive to right field, where Beashel made a fully outstretched diving catch to prevent at least two runs from scoring.

NSW were able to shut out ACT in the bottom of the seventh, to record a 2-1 victory.

Earlier in the day, NSW advanced to the grand final with a hard fought 4-3 win over Queensland. Scores were tied going into the 7th inning, with NSW adding a run in the top of the 7th and Queensland unable to add to their tally in the bottom half of the inning.
