Zara Mee leads the Aussie Spirit on the mound against Puerto Rico

5 July 2012

Aussie Spirit pitcher, Zara Mee was near perfect today leading the Aussie Spirit to their 13-0 demolition of Puerto Rico on Day 1 of the Canadian Open International Fastpitch Championship in Vancouver, Canada.  Mee allowed no hits and struck out 8 hitters.  She gave up two base on balls allowing the only two runners on base for the game.  The Aussie Spirit were once again perfect in the field, committing no errors, completing all all round good performance for the win.

Not to be outdone, the Aussie Spirit hitters had their bats working from the outset.  The Aussie Spirit girls scored four runs in the first innings, two in the second innings and finished the Puerto Rican team in the fourth innings scoring seven runs and finishing the game.

Leigh Godfrey lead the Aussie Spirit with two hits, but it was the clutch hits of Melinda Weaver, Clare Warwick and Stacey McManus that scored a combined 9 runs of the total score.  Jodie Stevenson, Chelsea Forkin and Godfrey did there job to keep the scoreboard moving with great displays of team hitting.  In total, the Aussie Spirit picked up eight hits over the four innings.

The team will now turn its attention to a big day tomorrow with games against reigning World Number 2, Japan and World Champions, USA.  The Aussie Spirit team is full of confidence after a great World Cup performance in Oklahoma just days ago.  Aussie Spirit last played Japan in Canberra in March and are ready to face the strong Japanese team lead by the World’s best pitcher, Yukiko Ueno.  They will then finish the day against the USA who today were taken to extra innings against Venezuela in their opening day today.
