Lewis calls it a day after a stellar career
Thursday, 18 December 2008Softball Australia announced today the retirement of 3 time Olympian, Sandy Lewis from International Softball.
As the 183rd Aussie Spirit team representative, Lewis has decided to step down from her stellar International career which included representing Australia on 326 occasions, the 4th highest on the overall caps tally for the Aussie Spirit team.
Lewis has been an integral part of the Australian team since her debut in 1997 and leaves International Softball with many career highlights, including 3 World Championships and 3 Olympic medals (bronze – Sydney 2000, silver- Athens 2004, bronze- Beijing 2008).
In Beijing, she was instrumental in guaranteeing Australia at least a bronze medal by hitting a stirring home run in Australia’s semi final against Canada, which aided the teams 5-3 triumph to set up a tough finals match with eventual winners Japan.
Lewis said “Having the opportunity to represent Australia at 3 Olympic Games has been an amazing experience which I will always remember fondly. I have been fortunate to play with some of the greatest softballers of all time and have made some wonderful friends.”
“I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and would like to thank Softball Australia, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, Queensland Academy of Sport, Queensland Softball and all the volunteers at the grassroots level for all their support, passion, dedication and commitment,” concluded Lewis.
Softball Australia takes this opportunity to thank and congratulate Sandy on her outstanding contribution and career, and looks forward to her continued involvement in softball. We wish her all the very best as she pursues her new teaching career.
