Hawks Fastpitch Softball Club: Same Club, New Era

The Hawks Fastpitch Softball Club, affiliated with Werribee Softball Association, capped off a successful 2018/19 season, achieving Homeplate status for the first time, finishing in 9th position nationally.

Previously known as the Altona Hawks Softball Club, the Hawks Fastpitch Softball Club recorded a 10% growth in membership.

The Club credited this growth to a focus on increasing participation across all areas of the Club and also a greater focus on recruitment and social media. They also recognise the importance of creating a sustainable Club with an increased focus on increasing the number of umpires, coaches and scorers.

The Rebrand

The committee unanimously elected to change the name of the Club to better reflect their change of direction. This change also reflected the Club’s move from Hobson Bay to Wyndham. President Mark Kriehn said, “We have new ideas and exciting plans for the future of the Club and wanted to start it off with an update of the club name.”

Due to the rebrand, communication to members of the changes that were occurring was extremely important. The Club has focused on putting its members first and ensuring they have the correct policies, procedures and support for members.

Governance

Hawks Fastpitch Softball Club has increased their focus on governance and have developed a Strategic Plan which has helped guide the club’s direction.

This plan focuses on the participation, development, communication, governance and sponsorship. To assist in creating and implementing the plan, the Club utilised tools and resources such as the Sport Australia Club Health Check and Softball Australia’s Homeplate website.

2019/20 Season

“The Club has a lot of potential as we have a great committee who are passionate about taking us in the right direction,” said Kriehn, who is excited about the Club’s future.

Already, two successful Come and Try Days have resulted in the recruitment of several new junior and senior members leading into the 2019/20 season.

The future is bright for the Hawks Fastpitch Softball Club, with more Homeplate Ladder success expected from the club this year.
