Down Under Series
In 2015, Softball Australia introduced the inaugural Down Under Series, an invitational tournament providing a platform for international standard softball in our own backyard.
The Down Under Series is a signature event that aligns with Softball Australia’s strategic objectives to showcase our Open Women’s national team to Australia and the world. It also provides an opportunity for our athletes to experience a high standard of softball to improve their own game and in turn assist in preparation for the ISF World Championships.
This series sees some of the best international and professional softball teams from around the world come to Australia to play over a 3 day series in a round robin format.
The 2015 Down Under Series was contested by 4 teams, including the Japan Toyota Red Terriers, widely considered as one of the strongest professional women’s team in the world. Other teams were CTI Aussie Spirit, CTI Aussie Pride and NSW Open Women’s Invitational Team.
In 2016 the series expanded, becoming a two part series. Maintaining the relationship with the Toyota Red Terriers the Invitational series remained whilst the International Series was born. The international series saw the invitation of the Japan and New Zealand National Team’s to play against the Aussie Spirit squad ahead of their charge on the 2016 WBSC XV Women’s World Softball Championship.
