The Game
Softball is a high-tempo, low scoring game. It is a bat and ball sport, played between two teams. Each team has nine players, with the aim being to score more runs than the other team.
It was originally played indoors, the sport is now played on a diamond-shaped field made up of a home plate and three bases. The opposing teams take turns batting and fielding. Each game has seven innings, with three ‘outs’ in each inning.
When batting, players try to hit the ball and then run around the bases. Once a batter has made it home they have scored a run.
When fielding, the team must try and get the batting team out (three players) and keep them from reaching the home plate to score a run.
Once the fielding team has dismissed the opposing team, it is their turn to bat, and so on.
