U15 Regional Championship – Final Day Wrap
Finals day down at Redlands bought a lot of action and quality softball. The day started with the U15 preliminary final between NSW Metro Orange and Queensland Storm; the winner to face Queensland Thunder in the Australian Regional Championship final. Both teams fought hard however defending champions Queensland Storm dominated in their batting seeing them advance through to the final.
The U15’s grand final saw an all Queensland affair between the Thunder and the Storm. Defending champions Queensland Storm took the early lead in the top of the second innings scoring two runs. The extent of Queensland Thunders fightback were two homeruns to Lincoln Walk and Hayden Gillett, but these were not enough to overcome the errors in the field and the composure of their Storm counterparts. Storm went on to win the championship 8-2. All U15 teams are to be congratulated on the efforts throughout the tournament.
Under 19 Men – Day 7
With the NSW team heading straight through to the final in the afternoon it was left to Queensland and ACT to battle it out for a place in the grand final. In an extremely tight game both teams came out fighting with two runs a piece in the first innings. The top of the third saw ACT surge ahead with a further three runs leaving the Queensland boys with a lot of work to do. The Queenslanders responded in the bottom of the 5th innings picking up four runs to take a one run lead. In the final innings both teams fought hard however the ACT boys were unable to score another run leaving Queensland with a 7-6 victory and a ticket to the grand final. Layton Reid (11 SOs) and Owen Thompson (3 RBIs) were Qld’s best for the match.
With a delayed start to the Grand final due to rain both teams were eager to get on the diamond. The championship game started strong with both teams scoring runs in their 1st innings. The top of the second innings saw Queensland surge forward with some impressive team batting and six runs to add to their total as they took a stranglehold on the game against the favoured NSW.
NSW were looking to respond however they were unable to overcome Layton Reid’s (10 SO’s) fast paced and accurate pitching. With New South Wales unable to score the Queenslanders gained their first win over the undefeated New South Wales side and took out the Nox Bailey Shield.
