The Aussie Spirit continued their impressive start to the Canada Cup campaign with wins in both games of a double-header in Surrey, British Columbia.
Today’s wins leave the Spirit unbeaten after three round-robin games.
Head Coach Fabian Barlow is pleased with his team’s progress so far, but warns that tougher challenges lie ahead.
“We have had a couple of solid days at the park, with still a lot to improve on,” Barlow said
“Everyone is making contributions. But the level goes up tomorrow and we need to be ready to match it.”
Australia 7, Canada Juniors 0
Solid hitting right through the lineup was the key for the Aussie Spirit as they romped to a 7-0 win over the Canada Juniors.
Taylah Tsitsikronis again led the offence with three hits, including a home run. Belinda White and Stacey Porter had two hits each. Jessica Torpey and Leigh Godfrey each drove in two runs.
In her first outing of the tournament, Amelia Cudicio pitched with authority, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings. Simone Freeman finished the game with a scoreless inning.
Australia 5, Calahoo 2
In the earlier game, the Aussie Spirit faced the Calahoo Erins, a surprisingly strong club team from Alberta.
Any thoughts that this would be an easy game evaporated quickly as the teams were locked at 2-2 going into the fourth inning. But a three-run fifth inning gave the Spirit a lead they would not surrender for the rest of the game.
Taylah Tsitsikronis led the Spirit offence with three base hits including a double. Stacey Porter and Leigh Godfrey each had two hits.
Pitcher Ellen Roberts did another solid job, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk, striking out nine batters in seven innings.
