Aussie Spirit to take on Japanese professional team

The softball spotlight switches to Adelaide over the Australia Day weekend as the Aussie Spirit take on a Japanese professional team in a four-game series.

Softball SA will host a two-day tournament between the Spirit and the DENSO Bright Pegasus.

denso seriesThe Japanese professional team features some of the world’s best softball players, including members of the 2016 Japanese World Championship silver medal team and the 2008 Olympic gold medal team.

The series will feature two games on Saturday January 27 and another double-header on Sunday January 28 at West Beach.

With Japan the top-ranked team in world softball, the event will be sure to display some high-class competition.

Aussie Spirit Head Coach Fabian Barlow expects the Japanese team to provide solid competition for his team ahead of the Asia Pacific Cup from February 1-4.

“Denso is a very strong team out of the JSL and a great opportunity for the Aussie Spirit team to get quality opposition just days out from the start of the Asia Pacific Cup,” Barlow said.

“It’s also exciting to be taking the Spirit team into Adelaide for the first time in quite a few years and playing in front of the South Australian softball community.”

Local South Australian player Chelsea Robinson has been brought in to support the playing roster as a development opportunity.
